The SDCRID Mentorship Project Presents:

To Cha-Cha or Sta-mmer? Using Classifers with Confidence!

With Dan Hoffman, M.A.
Saturday, May 24, 2008
1:00 - 5:00 pm

ASL uses a complex set of handshapes and classifiers and rules for using them in description and in action.  Interpreters often get tripped-up in managing their accurate use.  This 4-hour workshop is designed to enhance novice and experienced interpreters’ proper use of both- classifiers and handshapes.   Through lecture, visual aids, and hands-on practice, participants will improve their receptive and expressive understanding of these rich linguistic features of ASL.

The presenter will cover several points we need to know about classifiers (CL) and predicates. First, we will clarify the difference between CL and handshapes (HS). We will then explore various kinds of classifier predicates such as descriptive, semantic, locative, instrument, and plural. We will also investigate stative, process, and contact roots. In addition, we will incorporate numbers and letters into classifiers. Finally, some activities will be provided to put cha-cha in confidence, eliminating sta-stammer.
