Katherine ‘Katey’ Bartie, EIPA 5, NIC received a Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language Interpretation from Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana in 2007, and she accredits her first education in Deaf Culture to her childhood Deaf friends and later to her Deaf college roommate. She is quick to gratefully acknowledge their profound influence on her career and her life. She has been a member of the Deaf community since 1999 and card-carryin’ member of RID since 2006. A transplant from New Jersey, Katey works as a community staff interpreter for Deaf Community Services of San Diego, Inc, where she also works with the DCS Internship Program. In 2009, she spent 3 months in Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia aboard the MV Doulos and with the Thai Deaf community, which has since ignited a passion for exploring the global Deaf community. Her volunteer endeavors include mentoring local Interpreter Training Program students, San Diego’s Resource Fair, CPR Saturday, San Diego Spring Round Up, and events with both Deaf Community Services and The Rock Church of San Diego. She is a musician, a runner, a writer, and a self-proclaimed philosophy geek.
